8 Ball Rules

Breaking:

  • The balls must be tightly packed in the rack, with the 8 ball positioned at the center of the third row.

  • A legal break happens when either (1) a ball is pocketed OR (2) at least 4 balls hit the cushion.

  • Breaking will be chosen by Paper-Scissors-Stone method in the first round. Any rounds after the first round, the person who won the previous game will have the chance to break.

  • House rules apply: If the 8 ball is pocketed on a legal break, it counts as a win. If the 8 ball is pocketed and the cue ball scratches, the 8 ball is spotted and the next player takes over with ball in hand.

Assigning Stipes or Solids:

  • If any ball goes in on the break, the player who made the break shot has the next shot on the table, but the table is still open until a CALLED shot is put in (obvious shots are also considered called shots).

  • The only ball that is NOT neutral after the break and before stripes/solids are assigned is the 8-ball. So you may hit a solid into a stripe and hit the stripe in and you will be stripes. If you hit the 8 ball first, it is considered a foul. Any balls made will remain pocketed, the table is still open, and the next player will have ball in hand.

Fouls:

  • Scratch: Pocketing the cue ball.

  • Failing to hit your ball group first. (Or failure to hit the 8 ball first if that is the ball you are on).

  • Missing all balls on the table.

  • Knocking the cue ball or any ball off the table.

  • Touching any other ball in any way other than the initial strike of the cue stick against the cue ball (ball in hand not included).

  • Shooting while other balls are moving.

  • Not having a foot on the floor.

Any of the above fouls will cause you to lose your turn and the opponent will have ball in hand.

Fouls that cause a loss:

  • Pocketing the 8 ball in the wrong pocket.

  • Pocketing the cue ball or knocking any ball off the table when shooting for the 8 ball win.

  • Pocketing the 8 ball before you clear off your ball set.
